The Anchorless

The Anchorless are strange lifeforms endemic to Saturn. They consist of infinitesimally divisible sub-units, capable of merging into a greater whole on demand. Large enough clusters gain enough processing power to develop a demented, predatory intelligence. The creatures originally fed on Saturn’s native gaseous bacteria, but in recent years they have begun to change strategy - creating greater clusters and preying on humans.

The biology of the creatures is also remarkable in the fact that they seem to naturally emulate the mooring device, moving through stabilised pockets of the clouds as if the winds weren’t there. This allows them unparalelled freedom of movement and an ease of spreading between human or voxian installations in the clouds of Saturn.

Squadrons of knights routinely have to obliterate outposts where entire crews have been first assimilated, and then turned into a parasitic growth endlessly suckling on the nutrient piping that leads into the station’s hydroponic growth section. Indeed, strange, suited figures in cloudsuits watching outposts from the dark is de facto the standard for Saturnian horror.
